In the early hours of this morning, at approximately 2:00 a.m., April 27, the fire alarm went off at Wentworth Manor in the Royal Oak (Supportive Living Dementia Care) neighbourhood. Wentworth Manor is a Supportive Living and Long Term Care continuing care centre in Christie Park, SW Calgary, owned and operated by The Brenda Strafford Foundation.
Staff attended to the two rooms from where the alarm originated. The amount of smoke in one room prevented staff from entering, and the resident was evacuated by the Fire Department. The resident was taken to hospital in serious condition.
Wentworth Manor was fully staffed, and the sprinkler system and fire alarm both activated. Site management attended to the site as soon they were notified. The Medical Director is also on site to assess the health status of the residents in area affected by the fire.
The source of the fire is currently being investigated by the Police and Fire Departments.
We know this will come as difficult news for our residents, families, staff and community at an already challenging time. The Brenda Strafford Foundation and Wentworth Manor remain focused on providing the best possible care and services to all of our residents and families.
Thank you for your ongoing patience, understanding and support during this difficult time for us all.
